CMS Clinker Awarded Highest 3-Star Rating For 5S/QE

Tuesday, 26 July 2011, Kuching – Stepping up a notch to instill good housekeeping practices in its operation, CMS Clinker’s commitment to improvements at the workplace certainly paid off when the company was awarded the highest 3-Star Rating by the Malaysian Productivity Corporation (MPC) at its 5S/Quality Environment Convention for Sabah – Sarawak region. The convention was held in Kota Kinabalu, Sabah, on 21 July 2011. Garry Brandah, QA Executive/5S Coordinator for CMS Clinker received the award on behalf of the company.

“With this recognition, we hope our team will continue to work harder to make our working environment neater and more organized to improve our safety, environment and performance records”, said Hisham Mohmurad Amin, CMS Clinker’s Plant Manager.

The win is more significant given that implementation of 5S into its culture is a new practice for CMS Clinker. Earnest efforts to improve the housekeeping of the sprawling operation and processes according to 5S practices began just two years ago.

When asked to nail CMS Clinker’s winning edge in their entry at the 5S/QE Convention, the Clinker team attributed their success to the commitment of the entire workforce and support from Management to see through the improvement exercise on better housekeeping and compliance to environmental and safety practices.

Along the way, CMS Clinker was able to generate additional revenue from the sale of unwanted items such as scrap metal and propose innovation for the substitution of raw materials with alternatives such as sludge.

The implementation of the 5S practices has been a morale booster for the CMS Clinker team by helping to increase employee productivity as seen in the reduced stock-take time, quick retrieval of spare parts, and shorter down time.

With this award in the bag, CMS Clinker now qualifies for the National Level 5S/QE Convention expected to take place on 19 – 20 October 2011 at Sunway Convention Centre, KL.

The other participants from Sarawak making it for the National round include CMS Cement, Sibu Water Board, Sibu Municipal Council, Kementerian Alam Sekitar dan Kesihatan Awam (KASKA) and Pusat Pembangunan Kemahiran Sarawak.

Well done CMS Clinker and CMS Cement! Lead the way for CMS in demonstrating that a safe and incident-free workplace improves productivity!
